Glossary

This glossary helps readers move through patch analysis without guessing at the meaning of the terms. Use it when a page discusses update impact, draft value, tempo, or decision pressure.

How to use this glossary

Read the term first, then ask what decision it affects. A good term should point to a choice: pick it, ban it, delay it, or avoid it. If a word does not change a decision, it is probably not the main point.

Core terms

Patch impact

The practical effect of an update on competitive play. A patch impact is real when it changes what teams are willing to select, how they move early, or how they respond under pressure.

Meta shift

A wider change in what is considered strong, safe, or efficient. Not every patch creates one. A meta shift appears when multiple teams begin making similar choices for the same reason.

Tempo

The speed at which a team can act without losing control. A patch can raise tempo by making an option faster or lower it by making execution riskier.

Comfort pick

A choice a player or team knows well. Comfort matters, but after an update it must be compared with current value. Comfort alone does not make a pick correct.

Decision words you will see often

  • Buff: a change that usually improves an option.
  • Nerf: a change that usually reduces an option’s strength.
  • Priority: how often a team wants to use or deny an option.
  • Window: the moment when an option is especially effective.
  • Risk: the chance that a choice fails under current conditions.

What these terms are not

They are not fixed predictions. A buff does not guarantee dominance. A nerf does not make an option useless. The meaning depends on the match context, the role, and the team that is using it.

Reading rule

If a term appears on the page, look for the decision attached to it. That is the real meaning.

Example: “Higher priority” should tell you why the option matters now, not just that it is talked about more often.

Short rule: term first, decision second, conclusion last.
